Inspired by Davidson’s Honor Code and Growth Mindset

Chicago native Stephanie Bensinger Starr ’84 learned about Davidson through the basketball recruitment of her high school boyfriend, who later became her husband. They were leaning toward Stanford, but thanks to coaching changes there, plans shifted, and they both chose Davidson—a decision that has defined Starr’s path.

“Number one for me is the Honor Code.” said Starr, an English major and field hockey player. “I felt respected and was given agency over my work. The focus on honesty and integrity at Davidson has shaped the way I conduct myself in my life.”

The Davidson influence was particularly evident throughout Starr’s 31-year English teaching career. Her style matched that of many Davidson professors, with a focus on discussion-based learning.

“The small classes and close relationships allowed me to come into my own,” she said. “I hadn’t received specific feedback on my writing before, but my professors were patient; they gave me time to revisit and revise my work. I always tried to bring that approach to my students.”

Still dedicated to education, Starr now creates curricula for a non-profit organization focused on equipping parents with the competencies needed to effectively care for others.

One of Starr’s four children, Katharine Franz ’19, also became a Wildcat and enjoyed the scholar-athlete experience—just like Mom and Dad—as a member of the volleyball team. The evolution of Davidson through the decades is a big part of why Starr gives back and has established a planned gift.

“Although I loved my college experience, there were opportunities for improvement in culture, research, opportunities and equity,” she said.

“Thirty years later, my daughter reaped the benefits of Davidson not resting on its laurels. I’m motivated to give because Davidson has a growth mindset, and I know my dollars will help future students benefit from Davidson’s current, improving and evolving excellence.”
