Belk Scholar Skylar McVicar ’23 has kept her plate full, both on campus and across the pond. A politics, ethics and religion major (created through the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies), Skylar recently returned from studying abroad at King’s College London. While there, she loved meeting and interacting with students from around the world who share an interest in global issues. Outside of the classroom, the self-proclaimed foodie took full advantage of many different cuisines during her travels across Europe, a bonus of studying abroad.

“During spring break of my first year on campus, I participated in a Jewish identity exploration trip to Poland with the Chaplains’ Office,” she says. “That trip got me interested in visiting Berlin to further explore the cultural sites. Studying abroad allowed me to get there—I visited the Holocaust Memorial and the Jewish Museum Berlin.”

Skylar’s experiences have been fulfilling on campus, too, where she has held myriad leadership roles. She was first-year class president and then an SGA senator. After two years on SGA, Skylar ran for Honor Council as another way to contribute to her campus community.

Skylar plans to use her Belk experience stipend to continue her studies abroad and intern in Washington, D.C.

“One of the main reasons I was attracted to Davidson was the strong community atmosphere created by the Honor Code,” she says. “So, the chance to help uphold the code and gain practical experience in an equitable judicial-like system appealed to me.”

McVicar has written for The Davidsonian since her first year at Davidson and advanced to section editor for “Living Davidson.” She is also a Chidsey Leadership Fellow, a campus tour guide, a member of Warner Hall Eating House, works as a consultant at the Writing Center and is a team lead for the College Crisis Initiative (C2i). Looking ahead, she plans to use one of her Belk Experience stipends to subsidize a legal internship in Washington, D.C., and a second to intern in Singapore, exploring international business and government affairs.

Skylar loved her time abroad but was excited to return home to Davidson.

“Being abroad made me realize how special, thoughtful, invigorating and empowering the Davidson community is,” she says. “It feels good to be back.”
